The Power of NOW…
I was going to write on procrastination sooner but I…well, I, ahem, put it off.
Procrastination. Is it a lazy person’s disease? A temporary escape from reality? An easy habit? Maybe a coward’s corner?
Please don’t say “all of the above.”
The word begins with “Pro” which means we are “for” something and possibly quite good at it. Like putting off our mammogram (where they squash cups into saucers-ouch). My mom put hers off until she was 70. The dr’s finally talked her into having one and there on the x-ray was a spider-like cancer. Some things are definitely worth doing NOW.
“Now” is such a pushy word. It makes the rebellious child in me rear up and gallop in the opposite direction. Yet in the “nows” we have been given, there is the chance to get stuff done. Important stuff…like ordering are world.
It’s funny but when I get around to cleaning out that congested closet or crammed kitchen drawer I feel such a fresh surge of accomplishment and energy that I can’t imagine why I put if off. In fact, once its done I want to have home tours to show how I can now open and close, with ease, the pantry doors and the utensil drawers.
When I reestablish order in my chaos I not only take a weight off my brain I put zip back in my skip…and I take weight off my guilt scale (we all have one).
It’s not like we can get everything done “now” but you know and I know what we have put off far too long. An apology? A debt? A diet? A organizational rampage in our desk, our car, the garage (eek!)…
Guess what time it is…its “NOW.” Now is bursting with potential liberty and dignity.
Go for it!
LOVE THIS! And it’s such a timely word for today, (get it, “now”). Seriously, I enjoyed the reminder! THX!
That is really good Patsy! I am a procrastinator! I don’t know why! But, yes, I need to just do it! Thank you for the encouraging post!
wonderful read as usual!!:)
Guess it’s time to start writing, isn’t it? 🙂
okay! okay!
LOL, I know what you mean about cleaning a cabinet and wanting to show it off, though!
I love you Patsy! I’m so glad you heard God speaking to you….”make your bed”. You made the Women of Faith last September in Milwaukee. I love to read you also, you trulyare following what God hasplanned for you! Thanks for your inspiration!
The truth of your words came to me at the perfect time!! I needed this reminder and focus!
Thank You!
Thank you Patsy. We all need a little nudge on occasion to get that zip back in our skip. Amen!
Always appreciate what God has given you to share with all of us, Patsy. True Confession: I went home very “proud” after the first day of my freshman year of high school and told my Mother that I was the ONLY student in my English class who knew the definition of “procrastination”!!! My precious mother laughed until she had tears in her eyes. I could not imagine why she would find this “proud” moment in my new career as a high schooler to be so funny!! Many, many years/decades later I give the Lord all the credit that procrastination is no longer a dominant characteristic of my nature.
I LOVE this, Patsy! Too often the weight of “what-I -should-be-doing” robs me entirely of all energy and enthusiasm for “what-I-am-choosing-to-do-instead”. I might as well just do the “w-I-s-b-d” so I can get on with the joy of living!
BTW – I’m up for a house tour to see your clean closets, drawers and garage any time! Just let me know when they are ready!!! In the meantime, know I continue in prayer for you, Les and your ministry!!!
Thanks Patty for your post. It’s so true. The last month I’ve had a single focus to finish the crib blanket for my now 7 month great-nephew. When it was done I felt wonderful. Then I went on to tackle the pile of paper on my table/desk. What a wonderful feeling of freedom and weight off my shoulder now that these tasks are done! Now if only I could summon up the same focus to work on the other tasks.
Thanks for sharing this post. This is a problem we all deal with. We have been doing some cleaning out around our house lately and the more you do the more you want to do. It is so nice when the work is done even though we dread starting it.
So many of us need to read this and put the power of this message into action, including me! Pointing out the meaning for the prefix “pro” (that we’re “for” or in support of something) was especially poignant for me. Throughout each day it’s up to me to choose saying “later” or “now” — thank you Patsy and God !!
